Doctor of Philosophy

Course Information

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the University’s major research qualification and is administered by the School of Graduate Studies. Candidates undertake a research program which is likely to make a significant and new contribution to their discipline. Supervision is normally through a supervisory panel with one principal supervisor. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy signifies that the holder has undertaken a substantial piece of original research which has been conducted and reported by the holder under proper academic supervision and in a research environment for a prescribed period.

Study Mode

This is a research-only program.

Course Structure

Completion of an 80,000-word thesis (maximum 100,000 words).

Enrolling in additional subjects

University of Melbourne PhD students may apply to formally enrol in individual subjects in addition to their PhD enrolment. These subject(s) must directly assist the student’s research, and the approval of the supervisor and Head of Department must be gained. Doctor of Philosophy (Coursework)

This degree is also available as a combination of research and coursework.

Course Information

This course will provide PhD students with a quality, formal methodologic training in research methods to supplement the usual PhD research project. This course has been designed to prepare students for academic careers in Clinical Research, Medical Research, Pub lic H ealth Research, or for professional research-oriented careers in these fields. Formal training in research methods has become a sine qua non for PhD research higher degree training in human subject health and medical research.

Course Structure

The PhD with a coursework component is a 3 year program with up to one year equivalent of coursework and two years of research. Students will be required to complete coursework up to a maximum of 100 points. The coursework must be completed within the first year of the course, or if specified subjects are not available in a particular calendar year, up to 25 points may be carried over into the second year of the course. Subjects will be selected from the research methodology subjects of the School of Population Health, which are at postgraduate diploma and masters levels. The research project commences in year one as per the standard PhD.
